Farmer Research Network (FRN)

The Farmer Research Network (FRN)

The Farmer Research Network (FRN) is an innovative approach that brings together farmer groups, research institutions, development organizations, and other stakeholders to co-create and share knowledge aimed at improving agricultural practices and food systems.

Vision and Objectives

FRNs strive to enhance agriculture and food systems by fostering ecological solutions tailored to specific local contexts. This collaborative model empowers farmers to set research agendas, design experiments, and collect data, ensuring that the outcomes are directly relevant to their needs.

Implementation and Impact in Kenya

In Western Kenya, organizations like Farm Input Promotions Africa (FIPS-Africa) support FRN groups by aligning with co-creation and knowledge-sharing principles under the McKnight Foundation’s Global Collaboration for Resilient Food Systems (CRFS). These efforts have led to the development of experiments that improve advice on soil fertility and control crop pests and diseases by combining local and global knowledge. FIPS-AFRICA -

Additionally, the Drylands Farmer Research Network Project in Kenya's West Pokot County focuses on strengthening farmer-led rehabilitation of degraded lands to improve sustainable production of multi-purpose and drought-resilient food, fodder, and tree species.
